Benalla is a small town of just under 10,000 people. It is located in north eastern Victoria on what is commonly known as the Broken River gateway to the high country.
The town itself surrounds Lake Benalla. Lake Benalla was created in 1974 by damming the Broken River. It is an attractive wide waterway that is used for boating, swimming and lakeside recreational activities
Before European settlement, the region around Benalla was home to the Taungurong Aboriginal people. Historical records dating back to 1906 suggest that as many as 400 Aboriginal people would gather near Benalla to hold a corroboree.
There are three main festivals held in the town of Benalla each year. In March is the “Wall to Wall Festival”. This is where emerging artists feature outdoor street art. In May the Historic Winton Festival is held at the Winton Raceway. This is a weekend of non stop racing with cars from the 1920’s all the way through to the 1980s. Finally in October/November is the “Benalla Festival”. This is a celebration of culture, food and local history.
