Tocumwal is a pretty town with redgum forests and river beaches nearby. One of it’s most famous features is a seven meter long codfish that honors one of the town's favourite pastimes - fishing for murray cod.
When the town was settled it was used as a river port and became an important link in the river transportation system for many agricultural products.
In the second world war, the Aerodrome at Tocumwal grew to become one of the largest RAAF bases in the Southern Hemisphere. It was also the training base for the pilots of the Liberator bombers.
The word tocumwal is an aboriginal word that means “deep hole in the river’. The area was originally inhabited by the Ulupna and Bangerang aboriginal people.
In the early 1840s the first pastoral runs were established. The town of Tocumwal was then established in the early 1860s and finally gazetted in 1862.
