The town of Mulwala is situated on Lake Mulwala. The lake was formed by the damming of the Murray River. Lake Mulwala provides a wonderful aquatic recreational area and surrounding parklands.
Mulwala is linked to Yarrawonga via a bridge over the lake that makes what seems to be one continuous settlement. On its own, Mulwala has a population of approximately 2000 people.
Being on a large body of water and with nearly as much annual sunshine as Brisbane, Mulwala is a great holiday destination. It is often referred to as an ‘inland aquatic paradise’ that is popular for swimming, water sports and fishing. The town is 264 kilometers north-east of Melbourne via the Hume Highway, turning off at Benalla.
James McRae came to the area to take control of Mulwala and Boroge stations. He went on to build a punt and a public house in the area. In 1853 McRae secured a licence for what he called the Travellers’ Rest Hotel. The township itself was surveyed in 1858. A new hotel was opened in Mulwala in 1866 and the Mulwala Post Office opened in 1864. Interestingly the post office burnt down six weeks later. It wasn’t reopened until June 1st, 1866. By 1872 Mulawa had 100 inhabitants.
